MAPAWAY 2025

MAPAWAY, the summit of your summer 2025
15 – 24 augustus 2025 | Berghut Halverwege, Vaals

Between three countries and four languages, halfway up the Vaalserberg, the second edition of MAPAWAY takes place this summer: a cross-border mapping festival that brings together walking, observing and imagining. From Berghut Halverwege – a cultural stopover near the highest point of the Netherlands – MAPAWAY invites you to rediscover the Vaalserberg and its surroundings through routes, maps, talks and field guides.
This year the festival revolves around sources. From springs to sources of inspiration, from landmarks to raw materials. Maps take center stage as tools to explore, imagine and share these sources. The program includes group expeditions, self-guided walks, workshops and lectures, in collaboration with partners such as DAV Sektion Aachen, the Mountain Weather Information Service (UK), and cultural organizations from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

For whom?
Whether you are an artist or a scientist, a professional or an enthusiast: MAPAWAY is for map lovers, hikers, mountaineers, outdoor people and curious minds. The activities are open to all ages and backgrounds and are offered in multiple languages.
Why here?
The Vaalserberg is the symbolic and geographical heart of the festival. Not only because of the famous Three-Country Point, but also thanks to its varied landscapes and the rich network of hiking trails stretching across three countries. It is a place where language, landscape, ecology and heritage intersect – the perfect location for a festival that wants to be exactly there: halfway.
Who organizes MAPAWAY?
MAPAWAY is organized by Marlies Vermeulen and Remy Kroese, both lecturers at the Fine Art and Design Teacher Training program and co-founders of the Institute of Cartopology in Vaals. The festival is supported by the research group What Art Knows.
