A PhD in the Arts – Now Possible in Maastricht

Getting a PhD in the arts is now possible in Limburg. It can be done in MERIAN, a collaboration in the area of artistic research between Zuyd Hogeschool, Maastricht University and the Jan van Eyck Academie. MERIAN (the Maastricht Experimental Research In and through the Arts Network) is an environment in which selected PhD candidates from all artistic and academic disciplines can pursue ‘Maastricht-style’ artistic research.

“The MERIAN working group is very happy with the generous decision by Maastricht University to change its PhD Regulation. This allows for PhDs in the arts in South-Limburg,” says Ruth Benschop, head of the MERIAN working group.

MERIAN is an environment for the so-called third cycle: The possibility of doing a PhD, a trajectory that can follow the first cycle (bachelor) and the second cycle (master). Internationally, but also in some other places in The Netherlands, such a third cycle in the arts already exists. With the possibility to do a PhD in MERIAN in ‘Maastricht-style’ artistic research, Zuyd creates a distinctive position within the landscape of Dutch arts education.

MERIAN will be launched in the coming academic year as a space for collaborative research in between making and thinking. PhD candidates engage in innovative styles of research, utilizing the powers and fragilities of artistic and scientific practices. Their research addresses urgent matters of societal concern apparent in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion. This collaboration between Maastricht University, Zuyd Hogeschool and the Jan van Eyck Academie builds on existing expertise from the research, arts and higher education networks in Maastricht. The distinct Maastricht style of ‘research in and through the arts’ is problem-based, methodologically innovative, and focuses on interdisciplinary topics that can fruitfully be explored across the arts and academia.

The initiators are grateful that MERIAN is supported within Zuyd by, among others, Edwin Jacobs, head of the Maastricht Academy of Arts, and Mare de Groot, head of performing arts, as well as by Saskia Brand-Gruwel,  who holds the portfolio for education and research within the Zuyd Board of Governors. MERIAN has been developed over the years with the founding partners by lector Ruth Benschop within the Research Center for Arts, Autonomy and the Public Sphere. Several colleagues in the Maastricht Academy of the Arts, the Toneelacademie Maastricht and the Conservatorium Maastricht have been involved in developing MERIAN. This collaboration is now bearing fruit.

Promoveren in de kunsten − nu mogelijk in Maastricht

Promoveren in de kunsten is nu ook mogelijk in Limburg. Dat kan in MERIAN, een samenwerking op het gebied van artistiek onderzoek tussen Zuyd Hogeschool, Universiteit Maastricht en de Jan van Eyck Academie. MERIAN (de Maastricht Experimental Research In and through the Arts Network) is een omgeving waarin geselecteerde PhD-kandidaten vanuit alle kunst- en wetenschappelijke disciplines een promotietraject kunnen afleggen waarin zij ‘Maastrichtse stijl’ artistiek onderzoek doen.

“De MERIAN werkgroep waarin alle partners zitting hebben, is heel blij met het genereuze besluit van de Universiteit Maastricht om haar promotiereglement aan te passen. Daarmee is promoveren in de kunsten in Zuid-Limburg mogelijk gemaakt,” aldus Ruth Benschop, hoofd van de MERIAN werkgroep.

MERIAN is een omgeving voor een zogenaamde derde cyclus: de mogelijkheid om te promoveren, een traject dat kan volgen op de eerste cyclus (bachelor) en de tweede cyclus (master). Internationaal, maar ook op sommige andere plekken in Nederland, wordt een dergelijke derde cyclus in de kunsten al aangeboden. Met de mogelijkheid om te promoveren in MERIAN met de ‘Maastrichtse stijl’ artistiek onderzoek, neemt Zuyd echter een onderscheidende positie in het nationale kunstonderwijs in.

MERIAN gaat in het komende academische jaar van start als een ruimte voor gezamenlijk onderzoek dat zich tussen maken en denken afspeelt. Promovendi ontwikkelen innovatieve onderzoeksstijlen waarbij ze de krachten en kwetsbaarheden van kunst en wetenschap met elkaar combineren. Hun onderzoek gaat in op maatschappelijke kwesties die relevant zijn in de Euregio Maas-Rijn. Deze samenwerking tussen de Universiteit Maastricht, Zuyd en de Jan van Eyck Academie bouwt op bestaande expertise in de onderzoeks-, kunst- en hogeronderwijsnetwerken in Maastricht. De specifieke Maastrichtse stijl van ‘onderzoek in en door de kunsten’ is probleemgericht, methodologisch vernieuwend en gericht op interdisciplinaire thema’s die zinvol kunnen worden onderzocht met behulp van kunst en wetenschap.

De initiatiefnemers zijn blij dat MERIAN binnen Zuyd wordt ondersteund door o.a. Edwin Jacobs, directeur beeldende kunsten, Mare de Groot, directeur podiumkunsten, en Saskia Brand-Gruwel, binnen het College van Bestuur houder van de portefeuille onderwijs en onderzoek. MERIAN is over de jaren, samen met de medeoprichters, ontwikkeld door Ruth Benschop, lector Autonomie en Openbaarheid in de Kunsten. Collega’s in de Maastricht Academy of the Arts, de Toneelacademie Maastricht en in het Conservatorium Maastricht zijn betrokken geweest bij de ontwikkeling van MERIAN. Deze samenwerking werpt nu haar vruchten af.
