You’re invited to a special public event on CARE, ART and CARE AESTHETICS – a new academic theory that describes everyday life PRACTICES. Over the course of an afternoon, the event organised by Kate Maguire-Rosier (Sydney Care Lab | Maastricht University) includes a practical WOODWORKING WORKSHOP led by Philosopher Tom Maassen (Zorgesthetiek Werplaats | Leyden Academy of Vitality and Ageing) followed by an expert PANEL with international guests Prof of Applied Theatre James Thompson (The Care Lab | University of Manchester) and Lorenzo de Min (Elderly Care Physician). James Thompson isProfessor of Applied Theatre at the University of Manchester and co-Director of The Care Lab. He has written widely on applied theatre and now researches care aesthetics applied to dementia and other areas of social care. He is editor of the Routledge Studies in Care Aesthetics series and and his book Care Aesthetics: for Artful Care and Careful Art was published in 2022.  

Tom Maassen has been developing the concept of care aesthetics for elderly care in collaboration with artists (performance, dance, music, social design) and theatre scientists. One of his interests is woodworking, which he uses in his research and teaching. He is also working with Desiree Bierlaagh’s ‘Practical Wisdom’ (MBO Rijnland) practorate on educational innovation, and exploring a possible art of living, for people who apparently do not (anymore) pursue anything.

Lorenzo De Min is an Elderly Care Physician based in Amsterdam. He has an active interest in incorporating artistic methods in his medical practice.
